Duncan, BC

In the heart of the Cowichan Valley, Duncan is a thriving city on a one square mile plot of land. Although small in size, an unimaginable amount of history and a number of entertaining attractions have been packed in. The Cowichan Native Village, residing beside the powerful Cowichan River, entertains and teaches its guests with songs, dances, and stories. Watch as masks and totem poles are created in the world’s largest carving house. Discover the art of knitting Cowichan Sweaters on eight needles as Scottish settlers taught the Cowichan women over 100 years ago. Then, join in a feast of the west coast’s most treasured delicacy — smoked salmon!

Head into the center of town to observe more of the First Nation's art and culture. Duncan, the City of Totems, is home to over 80 totem poles, with 41 of them featured on the totem walk. Yellow footprints and a map guide you through the downtown area, which showcases the world's widest totem pole! Free guided tours are offered during the summer months. Keep your eyes peeled for the world’s largest hockey stick and puck. Acquired from the 1986 Exposition, they proudly adorn the Cowichan Community Centre alongside the TransCanada Highway.

Duncan is 50 km (31 mi.) north of Victoria on Highway 1. BC Ferries travel from Tsawwassen ferry terminal in Vancouver to Swartz Bay in Victoria, and from Horseshoe Bay terminal in North Vancouver to Nanaimo.
